Background

Dr Mike Boyes is an Associate Professor in outdoor education at the School of Physical Education. He has a background of teaching outdoor education, physical education and music in the secondary school system before becoming a lecturer and head of the physical education department at the Dunedin College of Education.

He holds a number of outdoor instructor awards, and is the immediate past national chairperson of Education Outdoors New Zealand. Dr Boyes currently sits on the Board of Outdoors New Zealand, and the Ministry of Education's outdoor education advisory committee. He is the Editor of the New Zealand Journal of Outdoor Education and the past editor of the Journal of Physical Education New Zealand.

Research Interests

Dr Boyes is interested in all facets of outdoor education. Recently, he has focussed on outdoor leadership and teaching/learning processes in the outdoors. Some of his research projects currently underway include: outdoor leadership decision making, sail training programmes and effectiveness, safety management by children, outdoor adventure tourism, and school based outdoor education programmes.

Dr Boyes is comfortable with both quantitative and qualitative research paradigms and employs mixed methods research designs where appropriate. He has completed funded research projects for New Zealand Outward Bound, the New Zealand Outdoor Instructors Association, the International Sail Training Association and Outdoors New Zealand.
