Lisette Burrows is an Associate Professor in Health and Physical Education Curriculum and Teaching at the School of Physical Education, and has been a member of staff since 1991. After completing her undergraduate and PGDip Arts (with distinction) degrees at University of Otago, she obtained her doctorate from University of Wollongong. Research interests

Lisette’s broad research interests are in the social construction of health and physical education curriculum and the place and meaning of health and physical activity in young peoples' lives. Her doctoral work was a critical examination of the ways developmental discourses have infused teaching and curriculum in physical education over time. She has published work on gender, ethnicity and disability in school-based physical education and young New Zealanders constructions of 'health' and 'fitness'. Her current research focuses on critical interrogations of obesity discourse and understanding the impact new health imperatives have on young people’s sense of their bodies and 'selves'.

Dr. Burrows' work has been funded by the Ministry of Education,  New Zealand Council for Educational Research, University of Otago, Australian Research Council, Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Social Science and Humanities Research Council and Fulbright New Zealand.
