Volume 6, issue 1

This latest edition of sosol comprises three articles. The first by Burdsey and Chappell provides an insightful examination of the complex relationship between social identity and football in Scotland and Northern Ireland. It highlights the manner in which supporting particular football clubs, namely the Glasgow teams of Rangers and Celtic, combines with other social processes to constitute individuals’ lived identities. The second, by Lee, explores the growing incidence and role of prayer in US intercollegiate sport and, in particular, how such developments are perceived by coaches. Finally, Mekolichick, in building on previously published work, quantitatively examines self-concept in US amateur body builders. Here, the role of body builder is explored in relation to developing a sense of self and personal self-esteem.

Having been launched in 1998, sosol has now entered its 5th year which is something of a landmark. As the submissions keep coming, I’d like to extend a special thanks to all those who have contributed to its development, as reviewers and authors. I hope the next 5 years will see further developments in building on the firm foundations laid.
