Editorial
Issue 2 Volume 4
Welcome to the second issue of
sosol in 2001. This issue marks the further development of the journal in a
number of ways. Firstly, the web site’s hit rate has increased significantly in
the second half of the year, with the watershed 10,000 mark being reached and
surpassed in the last few weeks. A principal reason for this increasing
readership is that sosol is now indexed on the database SPORTDiscus, which has
inevitably raised its profile within the sport science community. Secondly, we
are delighted to welcome Dr. Steven J. Jackson from the School of Physical
Education at the University of Otago onto the Board of editors. Steve further
strengthens the already reputable list of editors, particularly in the field of
sports media and globalisation.
This edition contains two main articles.
Firstly, Dr. Jeanne Mekolichick quantitatively examines self-esteem among
amateur bodybuilders. Using information from the membership of the National
Amateur Bodybuilding Association, USA, the principal hypothesis is advanced that
amateur bodybuilders will possess a level of global self-esteem that is
significantly below the mean of other social groups.
Secondly, Dr. Robert M. Fernquist undertakes an exploratory
analysis of the impact of geographic relocation of professional sports teams on
suicide and homicide rates in three U.S. areas.
Finally, we are also very pleased to be able to publish the
abstracts of the recently held conference entitled ‘The Nation and sport:
Anthropological, historical, philosophical and sociological perspectives’. The
conference, which was hosted by the Department of Sport Sciences at Brunel
University under the guidance of John Hunter and Sebastian Garman, included a
number of eminent social scholars as contributors on the given theme.
