EditorialWelcome to the sixth edition of sosol, which also marks its third anniversary. Although it was intended to present a thematic edition in July of last year, after much deliberation we decided that this could not be done if the journal was to maintain the standards of published work established in earlier issues. Hence, even though a number of submissions was received, they were judged not be of the required quality to be published in sosol and so we decided, reluctantly, to cancel the issue. This edition contains two articles in the main section and one in the student section. The paper by John Hudson examines growing concern in relation to the increasing commercialisation of English professional football. An historical case is presented of one club, Sunderland AFC, to suggest that current trends, rather than challenging 'traditional' football values, are merely part of long running practices within the game. The second article, by Steven Butts, offers a preliminary insight into the world and subculture of surfing, particularly from a participatory motivational viewpoint. The paper by Cunningham and Dollar explores the ethical issues associated with the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic bid, and the impact of its legacy. Finally, you will have noticed that sosol has moved from its original home at Brunel University to the School of Physical Education at the University of Otago. Although the move was a little overdue, logistical problems prohibited a smooth transition, so this edition appears a little later than originally intended. Further changes are anticipated in the continued drive to widen the reader-base and maintain the credibility of the journal as an outlet for quality research. We look forward to your continued support. RJ/KA | current contents | submitting?|
