The University of Otago is the oldest and most established academic institution offering Dance Studies in New Zealand, and our programme is one of the longest-standing worldwide. It offers students the opportunity to develop academic and research skills in Dance Studies while also promoting dance artistry and choreography. It enjoys an excellent reputation in the field, attracting students both from New Zealand and numerous countries abroad from all continents.

The Dance Studies programme is taught within an inclusive and vibrant environment. Our aim is to promote academic excellence and artistic creativity. Coursework and seminars are at the core of our teaching, and students can make use of the well-stocked dance collection in our central library. All of our courses integrate theory and practice, often applying theoretical findings in a studio setting. Prior dance experience, though welcome, is not a prerequisite for our degrees. We encourage innovative research approaches and strong cross-disciplinary links.
